Outreach is a key component of conservation – people will not protect something they don’t love. Throughout the year we engage a wide variety of stakeholders in conservation activities – from community and school groups to local and international tourists. We provide opportunities for people to learn more about the biology and behaviour of the marine life on our reefs and the roles they play in the marine ecosystem, to learn more about the impacts that humans are having on the health of reefs and the actions that people are taking around the world to try to protect them.
Community engagement is at the core of all our projects, as conservation of the marine ecosystem must take all components of that ecosystem into consideration for any project to be a success – and humans, particularly coastal communities – are an important part of this. We carry out presentations, workshops and activities designed to enable all to participate. We work closely with local schools on the island, teaching and developing programmes for environmental awareness and taking care of the island.
Green Semporna was founded on December 2012 by passionate youth leaders in Semporna, who believe that nature is everyone’s responsibility. The group provides a platform for the young people in Semporna to learn about the environment through volunteerism, to appreciate nature and the ecosystems around them and to enable and encourage them to practice green lifestyles. SJ SEAS are proud to work in partnership with Green Semporna in many of our projects – their enthusiasm and energy for conservation inspire us every time we work with them.
Engaging the next generation in marine conservation is vitally important. We carry out a wide variety of programmes with both local and international schools. The programme content is tailored to suit the needs of each individual school, with classroom-based learning and in-water activities (snorkeling and/or diving) both available.

We work with the Borneo Animal Welfare Society, Sabah (BAWSS) and International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) to provide free veterinary treatment for the pets and strays on Mabul. We also encourage neutering to try to bring the cat population on the island under control and create an environment that is healthier for both the animals and local community.
