We can’t wait to have you join us on Mabul Island for an unforgettable volunteering experience. Here are a few things you’ll want to know to help you get ready for your adventure:
Health and Safety
- Travel Insurance: Please make sure you’ve got comprehensive travel insurance. It’s important that it covers diving, medical emergencies, and cancellations—just to be safe!
- Vaccinations: It’s a good idea to check with your doctor about any vaccinations recommended for travel to Malaysia (like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus).
- Medical Concerns: If you have any medical conditions or allergies, just let us know so we can make sure you’re well taken care of while you’re with us!
Money Matters
- Currency: The local currency is Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), and it’s a good idea to bring some cash along, as not all places accept credit cards.
- ATMs: There are ATMs in Semporna town, but not on the island, so make sure you have enough cash before arriving on Mabul.
- Extra Costs: Night dives and extra fun dives can be paid by card, but for washing (RM10 per kilo) and certain items like toiletries or goods from the community market, you’ll need cash.
Local Etiquette
- Be Kind to the Environment: We love our island home, and we know you will too! Please be mindful of your waste, conserve water, and respect the local wildlife.
- Dress Code: Casual clothing is perfect for island life, but please remember to cover up when in public areas. Swimwear is great for the beach or diving, but not for walking around the resort.
- Respect Local Culture: Mabul is a Muslim area, so please be respectful of local customs and traditions. Modesty in dress is appreciated, especially in public spaces.
- The Local Community: Mabul Island is home to a local community, and we love supporting them. Many of the locals are part of the community we work closely with, and it’s important to be respectful of their way of life.
Stay Connected
- SIM Cards: You don’t have to get a SIM card, but if you want Wi-Fi outside the communal areas, you’ll need one. We recommend Maxis or Celcom for the best coverage.
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is available in the communal areas, but it can be a little patchy (welcome to island life!). We recommend using this as the perfect excuse to unplug and immerse yourself in the experience.
Packing Tips
- What to Pack: Don’t forget your swim gear, rashguard (if you want one), reef-safe sunscreen, a raincoat for the occasional downpour, and a warm jumper for those cooler rainy days.
- Diving Gear: If you’re a certified diver, bring your dive card and logbook.
- Waterproof Bags: These are a must! Keep your valuables safe when you’re out diving or snorkeling.
A Few More Things to Know
- Time Zone: Malaysia is on GMT+8, so make sure your watch and phone are set accordingly!
- Weather: The weather is hot and humid most of the time, but be prepared for rain—sometimes it can feel chilly when it pours! Keep your raincoat and layers handy.
- Diving & Fitness: Please make sure you’re fit and healthy enough for daily activities. If you’re planning to dive, a medical check might be needed, so get in touch with us if you’re unsure.
We hope this helps you get ready for your adventure! If you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate to ask—we’re here to help. Get ready for an unforgettable experience with Scuba Junkie SEAS!
