Honarary Wildlife Wardens

Afat

Afat hails from Mabul Island and is one of our longest serving Honorary Wildlife Wardens and loves nothing more than seeing baby turtles. He has been with Scuba Junkie since 2013 as a Divemaster and recently became a dive instructor. His students benefit from not only his years of experience and knowledge but also his calm and gentle manner and his amazing spotting ability!!!

Khai Smiley

Khai grew up in Semporna and was always curious about the ocean, after working as a helicopter engineer he decided corporate life wasn't for him and eventually joined the Scuba Junkie family. He started as a receptionist before doing his Divemaster training, once he finished his Divemaster training he pestered everyone until he became an HWW. Since then he has become a dive instructor and an assistant manager. But he still loves helping with our hatchery and is a proud dad when one of the nests he has relocated has hatched!!! He’s also been a huge help with the new trainee wardens we have.

Khai “Legend”

Yes we have a lot of Khais!!! Khai legend is called Legend for a very good reason, as anyone who has dived with him can confirm!!! His spotting abilities are mind boggling!! He started with Scuba Junkie in the kitchens (his pizzas are pretty special) before deciding he wanted to be a Divemaster. Over 10 years later and he is still as enthusiastic as ever about the underwater and caring for it, his title of Legend is very well deserved.

shar

Shar

Shar has the biggest smile and you can’t help but smile back when you see him! He joined Scuba Junkie in 2019 to do his Divemaster and has been with us ever since. He loves being part of the turtle hatchery team because he wants to help protect turtles and play his part in keeping them safe for everyone. His proudest moment is when he helped free a turtle caught in a fishing net. And even at a turtle nesting at 1am in the morning he will still be wearing that big happy smile!!!

Azlan

Azlan is a true eco-worrier as well as being an awesome divemaster!! He is always willing to lend a hand whether with the turtle hatchery, beach and reef cleans, presentations (sometimes to large audiences) or educating new divemasters about good diving practices. He is an amazing role model for how things should be done both in and out of the water and is passionate about protecting his local environment.

Trainee wardens

Shamin, Azrul, Sham, Azmil, RP, Wan and Qadyr are all Scuba Junkie babies having completed their Divemaster training with us and then working as PADI Divemaster. You can’t miss these boys wherever they are as they are full of life!! They are all passionate about the underwater world and love being able to find things to show to our guests. They all want to be a part of the hatchery because they want turtles to be around in the future and when they get married and have children to be able to show them turtles in their natural habitats. Holly completed her divemaster training at our Komodo branch and then came to Mabul to work as a divemaster. She wants to be part of the hatchery because it’s a worthwhile cause that’s she is passionate about and wants to be a part of it. Iry is our newest member of staff and she works on our reception in Mabul, when asked if she wanted to join the hatchery program she jumped at the chance!!!
