Our History

Scuba Junkie SEAS is the dedicated conservation arm of the award-winning 5* PADI dive centre, Scuba Junkie. Scuba Junkie Semporna was the first dive shop in the Scuba Junkie family and was opened in 2004 by 2 people who wanted to create a dive shop that not only provided safe and awesome diving but was also environmentally friendly. This dive shop was a huge success leading to the opening of the Mabul Beach Resort in 2008 resort which was created with environmentally friendly practices in its design right from the start. This approach to conservation and protection of the environment led to the establishment of SJ SEAS in 2009 with an original focus being better protection for sharks and rays in the Semporna region.

Since that date Scuba Junkie SEAS has evolved so that it now includes other areas of conservation including turtle conservation and trying to tackle the trash problem on Mabul Island as well as being an integral part of the whole Scuba Junkie family.

Eco-Resort

Scuba Junkie is committed to sustainable tourism by using eco-friendly practices in running its resort such as solar power, recycling, repurposing rainwater, going seafood free and supporting local conservation efforts.

Marine Debris

We work with visitors, the local community and organisations to manage and record marine debris through regular cleanups and education. We are passionate in exploring upcycling solutions to address the devastating impact of debris on marine ecosystems.

Turtles

We contribute to protecting endangered sea turtles through citizen science engagement via a turtle ID database, maintaining a turtle hatchery for the protection of nests and safe release of hatchlings and running a turtle rehab center.

Sharks

As the founding conservation initiative of Scuba Junkie SEAS, we aim to protect sharks through maintaining a sightings database, research, public awareness, and promoting sustainable tourism practices that do not harm shark populations.

Corals

Promoting sustainable dive practices is crucial to protect coral reefs. We conduct research to understand the impact of climate change on coral health and restore damaged reefs through coral transplantation, contributing to the protection of the fragile marine environment.

Outreach

Appreciation for marine ecosystems is the first step to their protection. We offer outreach programs to educate the local community and conservation groups on marine life and the impact of human activities on reef health.
